রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের জন্মজয়ন্তী উপলক্ষে এটি আমার এক অতি ক্ষুদ্র প্রচেষ্টা, আমি তাঁর দুটি কবিতা ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদের চেষ্টা করেছি। অনেক সাহস নিয়ে তাঁর চিন্তাভাবনাকে অনুবাদে পুনর্নির্মাণের এটি একটি উদ্যোগ, যদিও আমি জানি আমি তাঁর শব্দের এবং ভাবের প্রতি সঠিক বিচার করতে অক্ষম।

মাতৃবৎসল
মেঘের মধ্যে মা গো, যারা থাকে
তারা আমায় ডাকে, আমায় ডাকে।
বলে, ‘আমরা কেবল করি খেলা,
সকাল থেকে দুপুর সন্ধেবেলা।
সোনার খেলা খেলি আমরা ভোরে,
রুপোর খেলা খেলি চাঁদকে ধরে।’
আমি বলি, ‘যাব কেমন করে।’
তারা বলে, ‘এসো মাঠের শেষে।
সেইখানেতে দাঁড়াবে হাত তুলে,
আমরা তোমায় নেব মেঘের দেশে।’
আমি বলি, ‘মা যে আমার ঘরে
বসে আছে চেয়ে আমার তরে,
তারে ছেড়ে থাকব কেমন করে।’
শুনে তারা হেসে যায় মা, ভেসে।
তার চেয়ে মা আমি হব মেঘ;
তুমি যেন হবে আমার চাঁদ—
দু হাত দিয়ে ফেলব তোমায় ঢেকে,
আকাশ হবে এই আমাদের ছাদ।

My Translation
O Ma,
Those who dwell in the mist,
They beckon me ceaselessly.
They say “We frolic from dawn to noon,
And till the evening recedes.
We play with the golden light of sunrise,
And the silvery beams of the moon”.
I then ask: how do I reach you?
They say, “Come to the end of the world,
Stand with your small hands raised high,
We will lift you away where the heavy clouds dwell”.
But I say, “I can not.
My mother awaits me in her home
How could I leave her side?”
Hearing this, they softly drift away.
Better still, I will become the cloud
And you shall be my moon—
I will envelop you with my two small hands
And the whole sky will be our home.

অন্য মা
আমার মা না হয়ে তুমি
আর কারো মা হলে
ভাবছ তোমায় চিনতেম না,
যেতেম না ঐ কোলে?
মজা আরো হত ভারি,
দুই জায়গায় থাকত বাড়ি,
আমি থাকতেম এই গাঁয়েতে,
তুমি পারের গাঁয়ে।
এইখানেতে দিনের বেলা
যা-কিছু সব হত খেলা
দিন ফুরোলেই তোমার কাছে
পেরিয়ে যেতেম নায়ে।
হঠাৎ এসে পিছন দিকে
আমি বলতেম, ‘বল্ দেখি কে?’
তুমি ভাবতে, চেনার মতো,
চিনি নে তো তবু।
তখন কোলে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়ে
আমি বলতেম গলা ধরে—
‘আমায় তোমার চিনতে হবেই,
আমি তোমার অবু।’

My Translation
If you were not my Ma,
But belonged to another,
Do you believe I wouldn’t have recognized you?
Or claimed a place on your lap?
It would have been so much greater delight;
That I would have possessed two worlds to unite.
I would have dwelled here in this hamlet,
And you in the neighboring one.
I would have played here
The whole day to my soul’s satisfaction;
Then, when the sun retreated,
I would have voyaged to yours, by boat.
I would emerge from the shadows to startle you: “Guess who?”
You would have pondered,
Feeling you should know, yet knowing not.
Then, I would have leaped into your arms,
And whispered, in a tender embrace:
“You must surely know me,
O Ma, for I am your Obu.”
