A Tearful Farewell to Prof. Sukomol Talapatra

With heavy hearts, on behalf of Sahityika magazine, we share the demise of our beloved teacher Prof. Sukomol Talapatra. Not only he was our teacher he was a mentor, guide and always a friend. We all met him for the first time during our college days when we all were grooming from our tender days, and from immaturity to maturity. We ignited into our lives from his kind heart, radiant guidance with smiles, and boundless affection, in abundance of which will forever remain in our hearts.

We remember a beacon of unwavering guidance with friendship and kindness, that has left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
We bid farewell to our beloved Sir, who physically departed from this world, leaving behind his legacy, dedicating all his strengths and resources to making the world a brighter place. Leading a simple, yet graceful life, he encouraged us to live the same.

We shall always remember you, Sir.

The portrait was drawn by Manabendra Talapatra, his nephew (brother’s son) in 2013. He was the classmate of 1971 pass-out batch.

Message from our Sir for the 1972-77 batch of students:

বিই কলেজের সাথে আমার যোগসূত্র ৫ দশকের। আমি বিই কলেজের প্রাক্তনী, তাঁর সাথে তোমাদের মাষ্টারমশাই। বিই কলেজের শিক্ষকজীবনে আমার যেটুকু আনন্দ, যেটূকু তৃপ্তি, সবই তোমাদের জন্য। আমার একটি প্রিয় কবিতার কয়েকটি লাইন মনে করে আমার ভাবনাটা তুলে দিলাম তোমাদের সকলের জন্য।

বর্ষে বর্ষে দলে দলে আসে বিদ্যামঠতলে চলে যায় তারা কলরবে,
কৈশোরের কিশলয় পর্ণে পরিণত হয় যৌবনের শ্যামল গৌরবে।
ভালোবাসি, কাছে ডাকি, নামও সব জেনে রাখি, দেখাশোনা হয় নিতি নিতি,
শাসন তর্জন করি’ শিখাই প্রহর ধরি, থাকে নাকো, হায়, কোনো স্মৃতি!

ভাবিতে ভাবিতে যাই কী নাম? মনে তো নাই, ছাত্র ছিল কত দিন আগে;
স্মৃতিসূত্র ধরি’ টানি, কৈশোরের মুখখানি দেখি মনে জাগে কি না জাগে।

ডাকিছে উদার বায়ু লয়ে স্বাস্থ্য লয়ে আয়ু, ডাক শোনে ব’সে রুদ্ধ ঘরে,
হাতে মসি মুখে মসি, মেঘে ঢাকা শিশু-শশী, প্রতিবিম্বে মোর স্মৃতি ভরে।
তোমরা সবাই ভালো থেকো। ঈশ্বরের কাছে এই প্রার্থনা করি।

– তোমাদের মাষ্টারমশাই সুকোমল তলাপাত্র।

সারাজীবন আপনাকে অনুসরণ/ অনুকরণ করে গেলাম, কিন্তু আপনার অনায়াসসাধ্য শিক্ষা প্রদান ক্ষমতার, আপনার নিয়মানুবর্তিতা, আপনার সময়নিষ্ঠা, আপনার সমদর্শিতা, এবং সর্বোপরি আপনার মানবিক গুণের এক দশমাংশও অর্জন করতে পারলাম না।
স্যার, আপনাকে ঈর্ষা করি। খুব খুব ঈর্ষা।

Because of my discipline (ETC), I was not his direct student, I could not attend his classes. However, during our time (1972-1977) he was one of our most popular young teachers. Later, I could develop a direct relation with him during my short-term assignments with BE College, year 2015 onwards, and had enough tea-time with him. I am not the person to say any word on his knowledge and teaching, however I would remember his pleasant personality, and 1-2-1 interactions. Since 2015, Sir attended each and every annual reunion of the 1972-77 batch of students, except the last one of December 2024. We shall be missing you Sir.

A friend who taught me right from wrong
And weak from strong, that’s a lot to learn

আমার সারা জীবনে দেখা সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ শিক্ষকদের একজন। স্যারের বোর্ড ওয়ার্ক, অসাধারণ শিক্ষণ দক্ষতা ও জ্ঞানের পরিধি- সবটাই অনন্য। ওঁনার ছাত্র ছিলাম, এ গর্ব সারাজীবন থাকবে। ভালো থাকবেন স্যার, প্রণাম নেবেন। দেখা হবে, আবার, হয়তো অন্যভাবে – অপেক্ষায় থাকবো…..

He was a perfectionist. We had to use the value of acceleration due to gravity “g” to solve different problems in Applied Mechanics (EM, SM, FM). While it was a practice to use g = 10 ms⁻² in some books for ease of calculation. Generally, it was well accepted to have it 9.8 ms⁻² or 9.81ms⁻². But, not for Talapatra Sir. He told that value of “g” at Mean Sea Level at 45° N Latitide is 9.80667 ms⁻². This value is Universally taken to be average “g” for Earth. And, he would not allow it to be approximated beyond 9.807 ms⁻².

Now, we shall not have anyone asking questions to “Second Bench Corner” or, asking the spelling of “gramme” or telling “no-good students like us” the duration between two tides in Hooghly (Hugli) river, or lamenting (to yours truly) after a “Jol Bawali” that “now-a-days (thats Nov 1993) we dont get the sort of students that we used to get in the 80s”. You will always remain my most cherished teacher Sir!!!
