India’s H. S. Prannoy wins the Malaysia Masters Badminton title

India’s top men’s singles badminton player H. S. Prannoy might have broken a six-year title drought on 28th May 2023 when he beat Weng Hongyang of China 21–19, 13–21, 21-18 to win the Malaysia Masters. His celebration following the win was anticlimactically modest. There was no party or even a victory dinner. Prannoy spent his evening by himself in his hotel room with just his trophy and his thoughts for company. “All the other Indian players had left in the morning for Thailand ahead of the Thailand Open. So, I was just by myself.”

“It just felt very weird. I was discussing this with my coach (RMV Gurusaidutt) and I said the court looks so empty. And then we realised it was because I was the only Indian around. There were all these Korean and Japanese players, but I was the only Indian there. Everyone else had lost already. It was a really weird feeling but at the same time, it felt good that I was still there. I don’t always have that sort of experience,” he said.

The Indian Hockey Team wins Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 in Salalah, Oman

The Indian hockey team eked out a close 2-1 win over arch-rivals Pakistan in the final of the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 in Salalah, Oman to successfully defend its title. Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd at the Salalah Sports Complex, both teams looked threatening from the start but Angad Bir Singh’s strike in the 13th minute helped India get on the scoresheet. Araijeet Singh Hundal, India’s top-scorer at Men’s Junior Asia Cup hockey 2023 with eight goals, doubled the lead five minutes into the second quarter. In the semi-finals, India trounced the Republic of Korea 9-1.

This was India’s fourth title at Men’s Junior Asia Cup, having won it previously in 2004, 2008 and 2015. Pakistan is the second-most successful team in the tournament with three titles but their last win came 27 years ago in 1996.

Dev Shah, This Year’s Spelling Bee Champion.
After three years of studying, it took Dev Shah about 45 seconds to reach the apotheosis of his craft and become the national champion. The eighth grader from Florida won the Scripps National Spelling Bee — and $50,000. The winning word was “psammophile,” an organism that prefers or thrives in sandy areas.

After 14 rounds of words like “probouleutic” and “zwitterion” and “schistorrhachis,” Dev Shah, the eighth grader had to wait through one more commercial break. If he spelled the next word correctly, he would win the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“Psammophile,” a plant or animal that prefers or thrives in sandy areas, would determine his fate. He asked for all the word’s information — its definition, part of speech, use in a sentence — but he didn’t need it, evidenced by a slight smile as he spoke. “It’s surreal,” he said as he held the coveted Scripps cup, the official championship trophy. “My legs are still shaking.”

Dev, 14, outlasted 228 other competitors, including 10 finalists to win $50,000 in cash and a commemorative medal. Charlotte Walsh, an eighth grader from Virginia who finished in second place, will receive $25,000.

Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar wins Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.

Prathamesh Samadhan Jawkar wins his second senior international taking gold in the compound men’s individual event at the second stage of the Hyundai Archery World Cup in Shanghai, China.

Jawkar got the better of experienced Mike Schloesser in the final, 149-148, explaining that it was his ability to forget who he was battling for gold which made the difference. “I haven’t played a match with so much pressure,” the Indian said. “But I just focused on myself and my shooting process, wasn’t thinking much about my opponent.“

When Schloesser could only manage a nine, it opened the door for Jawkar, who made no mistake to claim a stunning victory
